Chapter 3-2: Sparks Fly

The day for graduation finally arrived. Shane and Carrie watched as their children crossed the stage to receive their diplomas. Neither had ever felt so proud. Of course, Uvie’s name went unspoken but she wasn’t forgotten. Verne stood and gave his valedictorian speech, urging his fellow classmates to never settle for mediocre and to always, each day, fight to do better than the last and making a lasting and meaningful difference for at least one person. Carrie openly cried and Shane sniffed into a handkerchief. He wouldn’t admit to tears, “just a bit of a head cold”.

After the ceremony, Shane decided to take his family out for dinner to celebrate. Vesper and Verne looked at one another, both knowing that this was truly the day they became adults and set out to each conquer a piece of the world.

“Ha, I can’t believe Verne was voted Most Likely to Never Leave the House,” Vesper teased as they sat around at the bistro, discussing the ceremony. “That couldn’t have been further from the truth.” She winked at him and he smiled back, knowing the teasing was in good humor.
‘Oh yeah, Miss Popular? I don’t think you’ve ever been popular a day in your life. They were all just too scared to vote for anyone else.”
“What? I’ve never been mean! Just,” she paused “honest”.
In all, the celebratory dinner was just the thing the family needed. Vesper announced that she would be moving out the next morning and, knowing how caught up she got in her paintings, who knew when she would emerge for some family time.

As they were heading home, Vesper’s phone rang. It was Thaddeus inviting her out for drinks in honor of the end of her high school career. Giddy, and a bit embarrassed by such behavior from herself, she agreed to meet him at the country club. When she arrived he greeted her as normal to which she was rather disappointed. Still no first kiss.

“I’ll get the drinks,” she offered, hoping for a chance to yell at herself in the bathroom mirror.
“Okay, I’ll meet you on the patio,” he grinned and headed out back.

She scooped up the rounds and started for the patio. When she first walked out, she didn’t see him. Then she saw his halo of blond hair over by the Jacuzzi. When she got close, she realized he had decided to skinny dip.

“Care to join me,” he jested.
She stood, holding the drinks for just a moment before deciding that yes, yes she certainly would like to join him.

The next morning, Verne searched the newspaper for any classes that would allow him to get a private investigator’s license. When he didn’t find anything, he made a call to City Hall. What he discovered is that experience and word-of-mouth were really all he needed. He could register as an investigator with them and then, people in need of those services, could choose from any of the registrants. He immediately had them enter his information.

“Dude what are you wearing,” Cary grimaced at Verne’s outfit.

“Hey, I’m an investigator now, I need to look the part,” he chuckled. Truth be told, he felt silly and debonair in his coat, tie and hat. If it was possible to feel those two things at the same time.

After Cary headed off, Verne decided he needed to get a little practice in staking out locations. Never knew when it would come in handy. “Ooh, some guy on a phone. Let’s stake it out and see what he’s hiding,” Verne thought. Perhaps he might be getting a little too hung up in this job already.

“Um, excuse me, what are you doing,” a voice called out to him. “Do you know those plants you pulled up are boxwoods and not common in this area. They were imported from Sunset Valley and you might be damaging the effects they have on helping sustain some of the local wildlife.”
“Are you an environmentalist,” Verne turned to find a very pretty young woman behind him.
“No, I’m not. Just a concerned citizen.” She frowned disapprovingly at his dropped bushes.

“Oh, I see. Well, these are actually fake bushes”. He rustled them at her and then quickly pressed the button on the main stalk and watched as they folded back into a tiny package. He’d seen them in the SimMall magazine and, even though they were rather ridiculous, he figured they would come in handy.
“Oh! That’s clever,” she smiled now. Verne didn’t think that SimMall had picking up women listed as a benefit of Finnigan’s Folding Foliage but he wouldn’t question it.

Just at that moment, when he was about to ask her about herself, his cell phone chirped at him. He had someone requesting his services. He bid the young woman farewell and realized that he had never even caught her name.

“You came,” the old woman greeted him as he met her in the park at the requested time.
“Yes, you need a cunning investigator,” he offered, trying to be smooth like in the old movies but he didn’t seem to pull it off very well.

The woman explained that someone at work seemed to be slandering her on some online forum and she wanted proof so she could do something about it. “This wasn’t quite what I had in mind” but he knew a paycheck was a paycheck so he took the case.

He headed home and arrived just in time to eat dinner with his father.
“So, how was the first day on the job,” Shane asked.
“well, I have a new case. I also met a really pretty girl,” Verne grinned into his plate.
‘What? You met a girl and you’re eating goopy carbonara? Do you have any idea what’s in that?”

After dinner, Verne found himself working out. He told himself it was for work. What if he needed to run from a dog or climb a tree or, or, or something. But he couldn’t shake the girl’s pretty face from his head as he stretched out his muscles.

He awoke fresh and ready to start his day. He headed to the house his client had directed him to so he could get a look at her computer. Of course the door was locked. He glanced around and decided that he should try his hand at picking it.

Frustrated, he gave up after about five minutes. He stood to leave.
“Are you stalking me,” he heard a familiar voice behind him.

“Um, no, I’m not. I’m looking for someone,” he answered. It was the girl from yesterday! What luck. Though, it wouldn’t be much luck if she had stood watching before she spoke. “I’m looking for Madeline Lochner. Is that you? I never did catch your name.”
“That’s my mother. I’m Abrielle,” she responded looking skeptical. Verne changed the subject.

“You look really lovely. I think that color suits you,” he half-whispered looking at the ground, embarrassed by what had come out of his mouth. “I was supposed to ask if she was new to town,”  he groaned inwardly.

                 “You’re a liar.”
                “What?”
“A liar, you heard me.” He panicked, trying to think of what to say. “Don’t you know that everyone says redheads should never wear pink,” and with that she finally laughed.

“Well, I think it’s nice,” he asserted, breathing a sigh of relief.
“Can I take you out for dinner,” he then blurted.
“There’s a little pub right down the road. Let me change.”

So she did and they hopped in her beat up car and headed to Carl’s. The ride over, though it was maybe only a 5 minute drive, had Verne nervous and his palms sweating.

She looked gorgeous and he had never actually been on a date before. Only he needn’t have worried. Abrielle was fun and easy going. When they first arrived, she headed straight to the darts. Turns out, she was pretty good and, crippled with sweaty palms, Verne was no match. She easily beat him so they headed out to the dance floor.

“She’s good,” Abrielle commented, regarding the guitar player. Verne sneaked a peek over his shoulder and realized it was Vesper.
“Ah, that’s my twin sister,” he revealed. Vesper winked at him and continued to play, slowing to a softer tune.

Abrielle wasn’t quite ready for slow dancing so Verne decided to go get some drinks. Truth be told, he was having a great time and wasn’t sure he was ready for a slow dance either. He didn’t want to ruin things before they really got started. As he waited for the bartender, he glanced at the clock and realized that it was almost three in the morning!

“Here you go,” he handed her drink over and they stood sipping in a comfortable silence.
“Oh my gosh, did that guy behind me just pee on the floor,” Abrielle gasped. “I think we should get out of here.” They both laughed and hurried out the door.

He walked her down to the street where they were both surprised to see the sun starting to rise. She explained she had to work in the morning but hoped to hear from him soon and hopped in her car.

Verne stood watching her, knowing that, one day, he was going to marry her.

Chapter 3-1: 100 Years

Verne and Shane enjoy spending time together, playing chess. It doesn’t require much talking so they can avoid talking about Uvie. Even though the police have declared her dead, the empty urn does little to soothe their pain. So the men play. Shane realizes that Verne is not quite a genius like him, but his perception skills certainly pay off.

While her son and husband stare at the chess board, trying to outmaneuver the other, Carrie disappears to the graveyard. She stands at her father’s grave and weeps. “How could you have left me without saying goodbye?” she wonders, tears streaming down her face. As she thinks of her father, Uvie comes into her head. She also missed a goodbye to her daughter, and the unknown is killing her more than the guilt over her father’s death ever could. She wonders how she is supposed to move on when the people around her keep disappearing.

“Can I tell you a secret,” Patty asks Vesper one evening. Patty had become a close friend of Vesper’s after Uvie’s disappearance. Though she and Vesper were as different as apples and bananas on the outside, they were similar under the surface.
                “Sure.”
“It’s bad,” Patty looked away, unsure how to tell her friend.
“What did you get a B on the history test,” Vesper laughed, sure her perfect friend couldn’t be hiding something so bad.

“I, I’m pregnant,” she finally whispered.
                “You’re what,” Vesper exclaimed loudly.
“Shh, I don’t want everyone knowing. And he dumped me.”
‘So the rumors are true. I’d heard about it, even Verne heard about it but no one believed anything. What are you going to do?”
                “I don’t know.”
“Well, I say you go kick his door, and something else, in.”

Secretly, Vesper was relieved that it wasn’t her. Not that there was any chance of it happening to her. She’d never had a boyfriend or even her first kiss yet. But what was a teenager supposed to do with a baby? Patty had straight A’s and was bound to get scholarships to at least some of the Azalea League schools. Now she would have to raise a baby instead, probably alone.

Vesper has always shown an interest in fashion though her tastes seem to be a bit more edgy and less classic than Carrie’s personal taste. Carrie invites her daughter to accompany her one weekend to a job at a client’s home. Things go well and they finish the job in good spirits.

“Alright, I have one more appointment in the center of town. Let’s go,” Carrie says cheerfully.
“That’s okay mom, you go on ahead. I’ll see you back at the house,” Vesper replies looking off at something Carrie doesn’t see.

What Carrie missed was her client’s brother. He had just walked out of the house and Vesper couldn’t help but notice his good looks. She introduced herself and they began talking. Finally, as the sun started to set, she declared that she was starving and suggested they get some food at the old diner.

They ate and laughed and had a fantastic time. Besides her slight crush on Antwan, Thaddeus was the first guy that she really liked. When they left the diner, she could feel him looking at her and she liked the way it felt. Even though he was older, she couldn’t help hoping he was interested too.

Across town, Verne was walking Rump. He had planned a different sort of day but by the time he woke up, ate, showered, got dressed, and got Rump ready to go, it had been later than he had thought. So just a walk it was. Twinbrook really was a beautiful town. He didn’t think he really ever took the time to appreciate the views but he was going to try to stop taking so many things for granted. He had learned in his short time on this planet that life was short and fleeting.

“Oh my God! Really! Can’t you knock,” Vesper shouted as Verne walked in on her in the shower. He quickly turned tail and ran. Seeing his sister naked had not been in his to-do list for his life.

After her interrupted shower, Vesper met Patty at the salon. Today was her mother’s day off so, hopefully, her plan would go off without a hitch.
“Wow, you’re so big,” Vesper exclaimed.
“Um…thanks,” Patty sighed. Vesper was rather clueless about diplomacy.
“Can I, can I feel it?”
Patty nodded her approval and Vesper leaned in to feel the little parasite. She felt the baby kick and grimaced at the idea of it waging war. She glanced up and, to her surprise, saw that Patty was ecstatic, near tears really.
“What is it,” Vesper asked, concerned for her friend’s mental well being.
“It’s just that I am so happy. Even though Cary left me, this baby is my real family. I can’t wait to meet it.”

After the emotional outburst on the sidewalk, Vesper walked in and handed over some allowance to the tattoo artist. She quickly explained what she wanted. Unfortunately, during that time, Patty went into labor and had to leave. By the time Vesper was done, there still had been no word on the baby so she decided to go out and celebrate in her own way. When she finally arrived home, her father was waiting for her.

“Vesper, where have you been,” he started, worried tone creeping into his voice.
‘Wait a minute, what are you wearing? And, heaven forbid, is that, is that a tattoo,” he yelled.
Without waiting for an explanation, he sent her to her room. She didn’t get a chance to explain that the sparkly stars were in honor of her sister but, knowing her dad, it probably wouldn’t make a difference.

With so many birthdays coming up, Shane quickly contacted the contractor who had originally done the house. He had some money saved up and wanted to get working on it some more before Verne took over. The least he could do was make sure his family was well taken care of. Soon, the house was starting to look like more than a box. They still had a lot to go, but, finally, it was starting to look like home.

Shane’s birthday was the first to arrive. Carrie surprised him with a party at Old Ebbitt’s where he proposed so long ago. A feeling of peace washed over him as he watched his family and friends cheer him on for the next chapter of his life. It was only after the sparkles wore off and everyone dispersed for dancing that he began to feel worried.

“Hey you, come here,” he whispered to his wife, pulling her into a slow dance.
She rested her head on his shoulder and they danced silently for a few moments.
“Can you still love an old man like me,” he said, looking into her eyes.
“Don’t you forget Shane, I’ll be right behind you. Besides, there has never been anyone else for me. Not since you stammered your way into my heart to ask about prom and got arrested in the process.”
She held his face and kissed him deeply, showing rather than telling him how much she truly loved him.

She was right though. Soon it was her turn. This time, it was only family that gathered at the house. Though she had started working in the fashion business, her role and true career had always been a wife and a mother and she couldn’t imagine celebrating anywhere but home. Gene was there as well, her and Tanner finally making their relationship public. And one random party crasher who didn’t even bother to pretend to celebrate with them.

After she blew out her candles, she found her sister and sat talking with her about all the things they had done in their lives. Dorothy had recently lost her husband, and though she had her children and a grandchild, she still wasn’t happy. Carrie tried to show her how great life had been and how blessed they both were but, as always, Dorothy was never happy unless she had something to complain about.

Both Shane and Carrie continued in their careers after becoming elders. They found that neither of them was ready for retirement yet. Shane was a worried as ever about providing for his family after he was gone and Carrie just couldn’t stand the empty house while the kids were at school.

“So, I need a makeover. People are making fun of me for my clothes,” said Sondra Sergeant.
“Is this woman kidding me? Didn’t she scream at me about my horrid fashion sense and blame that for Uvie’s disappearance. Does she not remember me,” Carrie can’t believe this woman. So she does what anyone in her position would do. She makes her look like a fool and gets a good laugh out of it.

Finally it came time for the twins’ birthday. Carrie decided that, once again, home was the place to be. She made sure to invite Cary, Verne’s cousin and best friend and Layla, his girlfriend. Carrie didn’t know that Layla was only a crush, whoops. She also invited Patty, Vesper’s best friend, and Thaddeus, some boy Vesper had mentioned a few times. Then, of course, family as well. All in all, it was going to be a big party.

Layla was the first to arrive. And arrive she did, decked out in a wedding dress. A similar dress to the one that Carrie had worn when she got married.
“Um, Layla, you look, uh, nice,” Verne stammered. “Got a big event after the party?” He found that he couldn't quite stop looking at her boobs.

“Oh, no silly. I’m just ready to get married. Don’t you become of age today,” she smiled coyly.

That caught his attention! Verne fought really hard to keep his mouth from dropping open. She’s nuts! He had to figure out how to let her down lightly and figured that, since they had never dated, telling her that they were just friends would be the obvious way to do this.

Layla did not take the “just friends” speech very well, no matter how true it was. She had never given him the time of day in high school but, suddenly, that didn’t seem to matter now. Cary got a huge laugh out this but Verne wasn’t sure how to react. So he just shrugged his shoulders and got some turkey.

Not that any of it mattered. Layla quickly moved on and began dancing with Cary. Patty looked on, unsure of how to feel. Cary was her ex-boyfriend and her son’s father and, to see him dancing with another girl, right in front of her, was painful. She quickly moved to another room so as to avoid him. Another oversight on Carrie’s part. “How am I supposed to keep everyone straight,” she bemoaned!

Vesper, meanwhile, was chatting with Thaddeus.
                “You came,” she smiled.
                “Of course. You wanna dance?”

“Um, there’s just something I have to do first,” she was ready to blow out her candles and officially become a young woman before her father found out that she and Thaddeus, who was a full-fledged adult, were more than just friends. No need having the cops arrive on a birthday.

Of course, after she blew out her candles, it was Verne’s turn. Layla was mysteriously missing from the celebrations for him. Verne guessed that clapping for him as he blew out his candles might have been too much for her.

The twins stood side by side, for the first time realizing that soon, they would be living apart. Vesper wanted to get out, travel to Egypt, work on her art and do things with her life. Verne wanted to stay home and make a difference. He knew he needed to get his PI license first but he was ready.

They couldn’t help thinking that, for the first time, neither knew what to expect for their next birthday.

Character Bio: Vesper Avendale

Name: Vesper Avendale
Traits: Slob, Artistic, Absent-Minded, Dislikes Children, Friendly
Favorites: Pop, Grilled Cheese, Red
Aspiration: Visionary

Vesper is the middle child and the oldest of the twins. She is fiesty in nature, as might be evidenced by her favorite color. Since the moment she could hold on to a small utensil, she has been practicing her art. She started with the xylophone but soon discovered that it was her eyes, not ears, that cherished beauty the most.

Though she can sometimes be mean and jealous of her siblings, deep down she cares for them more than she lets on. She does tend to be rather narcissistic in nature, always thinking that she can do better or should be chosen other than someone else. Her anger and jealousy is short-lived though since she tends to lose herself once again at her easel, forgetting who she was upset with and why. Never one to hold a grudge, she moves on each day with a renewed passion for her art and life.

She never lets anyone choose her path for her and she lives life the way she sees fit. Beauty, and the display of it, is her one passion in life and supercedes everything else; boys, schoolwork, sometimes even family. After her sister's disappearance, Vesper chose to get a tattoo to symbolize her sister's spirit. Regardless of her father's disapproval, Vesper knows she did the right thing. He doesn't know she is seeing a grown man, closer to her father's age than her own but, once again, this is the path she is choosing. He seems to understand her more than any of the young, immature boys she graduated with.

In the end though, all her focus goes towards creating works of art that people will treasure for decades, even after her death. Can she find a balance between her artistic obsession and a healthy family life?

Character Bio: Verne Avendale

Name: Verne Avendale
Traits: Good, Perceptive, Hates the Outdoors, Loner, Light Sleeper
Favorites: Kids, Hamburger, Yellow
Aspiration: Pervasive Private Eye

From birth, Verne has been a bystander. His parents are both strong-willed people who know just what they want out of life. His twin sister has such an eye for art that she had practically been creating the moment she arrived out of the womb. And Uvie, well Uvie was her own spirit and nothing, not even teasing could change her.

Among them, Verne is much like a lost soul. He spent his whole life standing by their sides and, somehow along the way, he never remembered to figure out his own desires. Cheering Vesper on during her dance recital, discussing the fairies' by-laws with Uvie, and being a straight A student don't give him the answers he needs to decide who he wants to be.

When tragedy strikes home, Verne's disgust with the laziness of the local police department suddenly inspires him. Who else could be losing family members, only to have the uniforms dawdle until the trail is cold? Who out there is missing a loved one, only to be told that, due to lack of evidence, the police don't want to look anymore so they just give up? If Verne can somehow protect another family from suffering the way his has, he will do anything he can. Not in uniform, no. He plans on working for himself to cut through the red tape and bureaucracy of the local 'system' so that people can actually be helped.

Character Bio: Uvie Avendale

Name: Uviana "Uvie" Avendale
Traits: Couch Potato, Easily Impressed, Lucky, Insane
Favorites: Egyptian, Stu Surprise, Purple
Aspiration: Animal Rescuer

Uvie, the eldest of the Avendale children, has a sweet, childlike nature. Ever since she was a little girl, her favorite past times were talking to imaginary friends, playing with her horse (though wooden he was), and imagining fairies and elves in the forest.

She's rather naive and tends to gravitate towards her imagination rather than reality. She seems to have a hard time separating the two and, in combination with that, she does and says what she thinks. Most people do not understand her so it's not unusual that, outside of her family, she has no friends.

Even her family though, doesn't understand her. Her mother tries and seems to accept her for who she is but her father seems to have a more difficult time with it. He wants to 'fix' her and can't grasp that she is fine the way she is. The elves like her inquisitive nature. The fairies say that she will always bring luck wherever she goes and with whomever she chooses to share her life with. Her best friend is her dog, Rump who she got for Christmas one year. She doesn't see anything wrong with talking to him. He talks back!

Unfortunately, the fairies seemed to be wrong about her luck. Or were they? After her high school prom, Uvie disappeared, without warning, without note, and without any breadcrumbs to follow. Did she find her home among the mystical or are nefarious deeds to blame for her vanishing act?

Character Bio: Shane Avendale

Name: Shane Avendale
Traits: Genius, Loves the Outdoors, Neurotic, Ambitious, No Sense of Humor
Favorites: Hip Hop, Key Lime Pie, Blue
Aspiration: World Renowned Surgeon

Growing up, Shane was happy. Sure, seeing his father be taken by the Grim Reaper at the tender age of one was rather traumatic, resulting in a completely neurotic and worrisome nature. To be honest though, Shane doesn't know if he really remembers the incident or only thinks he does because of his mother's recounting of the story. He was young after all.

His mother; a subject all of her own. She abandoned him when he was just a teen, leaving him to care for his younger brother, Tanner, all alone. He worried and fretted about her, eventually settling into a routine. It wasn't until he had his own children that the resentment truly set in. He could never understand how she could have left him, especially not when he was holding his own babies' tiny fingers. From the moment he held his daughter, Uvie, Rebecca was never mentioned openly again.

Shortly after she became a teen though, Uvie disappeared. Officially, the Twinbrook Police Department declared her dead though there was no evidence to support the theory. Losing a mother had been bad enough, but a daughter was sheer torture. His neurotic tendencies continued, leaving him to nag his other children in hopes that he would never lose them. How much loss can one person really take before they are driven insane?

Character Bio: Rebecca Avendale

Name: Rebecca Avendale
Traits: Loves the Outdoors, Bookworm, Unlucky, Hopeless Romantic, Unflirty
Favorites: Pop, Fruit Parfait, White
Aspiration: Professional Author

Rebecca never had an easy life. She had planned, and succeeded, in moving away from Sunset Valley as soon as she became of age. Unfortunately, her luck followed her there.

Upon arriving in the sleepy town, she thought she found true love in Goodwin Goode. With a name like that, how could she go wrong? But wrong she went when she discovered that, not only was he married, he also had a small daughter. She quickly broke it off and moved on.

Then she found Justin. Justin, who really was her true love. Until he set himself on fire and burned to ash on their son's first birthday. After Justin, she gave up looking for love. But he didn't give up on her. Somehow, she ended up pregnant with her ghost husband's child. Shortly after her second son's birth, Rebecca decided to take a small vacation, to ease away from the stress of being a single working mother who was also trying to fulfill her dream to become a professional author.

And that is where her story ends. She was never seen or heard from after she left for her vacation. Did her luck follow her there, Grim claiming her? Or was her life just too much so she decided to start over?
